Got a used 60gb, won't read disks, Help? (Solved)
 

Hi guys, I just got a YLOD 60gb from a pawn shop. It was on the clearance table so I took a chance. Brought it home, yup YLOD, reflowed it and it now works. However, someone had taken it apart before. Even thought the warranty sticker was on it and it looked untouched, there were missing screws and the blu ray drive connector on the motherboard had the little lock tab broken off. I'm getting by using slits of business card to hold it in.

Anyhow, the main problem that I have now is the blu ray drive. The system turns on fine, takes in discs and ejects discs fine, shows the blue led when there is a disc in the drive, showing that least that part of the ribbon cable is working but, on the screen I do not see the little dial rotate indicating that it is trying to load.

So, I took the top of the Drive off, put a PS2 game in it, popped on the magnetic disc and turned it on. The red drive laser turns on, adjusts itself once and then stays continuously lit, while the disc spins.

I guess that it knows that it is a dvd because it's using the red laser.

Sometimes when turning it on without a disc in it I see the blue laser turn on for a second.

I'm stuck and i don't know anyone that has one of these so I can swap drives to check it.

Any special tests I can do?

From what i have gathered from watching videos is that if the problem is the laser, then you will at least see the loading indicator rotate.

This is my first PS3 so I am unsure of what I am supposed to be seeing.

I cleaned the top of the laser, I didn't take it apart and clean it yet and I also did the filesystem restore.

Actually, you need to check the ribbon cable connection to the board still. All that will still happen even without a proper connection to the board. You said the clip on the board was broken (that happens a lot) so look back at how the ribbon cable contacts the board and find another way to hold it down. I'm fairly certain that thats what your problem is if your laser isnt dead (doesnt sound like a dead laser).

try ebay or ioffer you can buy a new drive on there. if you want to spend a little bit on money

what up ee_dahc i dont know if you want to do this but this is what you can do. i have done this with my ps2 and xbox 360 and mp3 player. ok 1 thing firts go to game stop and buy a used ps3 see if you can find one without any stickers on it. buy it and switch it. or you can just take out the working disk drive and do that. make sure you find a slow person over there at gamestop. i have done this b4 and it works all the time. DONT DO IT WITH WALL MART. they are a pain the in the as* over there. if you need help with this pm me and i will be more then happy to help or if any one els needs help with this.

I had to replace a blu ray drive once after experiencing similar problems but the only difference was that the blue laser was not shining. Then I broke the rivet cable on the blue ray controller after replacing the blue ray drive. The PS3 then displayed the exact symptoms you are describing. I tried everything to keep that ribbon cable connected from applying pressure to electrical tape but nothing worked...In the end I remarried a separate blu ray controller board to my ps3 and it has worked ever since. P.S. Make sure to make a backup of your dev_flash folders...particularly 2 and 3 before doing this... I lost blu ray playback because I didnt read into it enough. It might also help to put in the latest blu ray disk you have so you can know what DRL keys to use if needed. The tutorial is very good and has a video to accompany it...

Man, I feel ya, it is an easy way to fix something. I've actually done that when i was in high school. I bought a Sega Nomad at the pawn shop, ha, yeah that's where it all started with me getting systems from pawn shops. The Nomad worked but was scratched and was missing the battery cover. Walmart had one that had sat on top of their shelf for a year or so, and so I bought that, and put my PS one in the box and returned it to Walmart. Got my $ back. When they asked me what was wrong, I told them the the truth, the battery pack was missing. What I didn't say was that i kept the battery pack.

I still feel bad about it.

But I also still have the Nomad.....

I don't think I can do that sort of thing anymore.

Nothing I do is working... Ribbon cable in, with biz card bits on top, and piece of corn dog stick wedged in to hold it down snug. This may be a lost cause.

Sounds like your laser is still functional. As far as I know, typically blu ray controller boards are sold with motherboards because it used to be that you had to have the BD controller specific to a particular motherboard.. Since this is no longer the case I m willing to bet a BD controller board sold by itself wont run you too much. If not you can always salvage the parts. You would be surprised how much you can make off a broken ps3. I have also bought a ps3 with the warranty sticker "still in tact" when every piece conveniently did not work except the battery. I have it set aside for spare parts and to practice on before working on my functional ps3.

Well, I wonder if i can use a ps3 break / key to play from the hard drive.. Do those dongles actually check to see if there is a game in the drive?

Perhaps I can use my brother's slim to put games on my external drive.

Thanks, I may part it out but i wish I could find out if its the mother board or the drive that has the problem.. This will tempt me to buy another one to test it all out... ahhhh it's a bad cycle.

I wonder if whoever pawned the ps3 swapped the drive or if someone who works there did. They said that they test systems when poeple bring them in. From what I've read if someone swapped the drive it will not load as well.

if it is on a hackable firmware you can do the remarry process if you are sure the laser is good and the drive was indeed changed.
