format a 3tb external hard drive to fat32

Just bought a 3Tb external hard drive!! :D
how ever i have already run into issues with it..
i bought a 2Tb external about 9months ago and used fat32formatter with it and it worked perfect.. but with this one it is giving me a read/write error..

i have tried several other free programs but they all end up giving me errors..

using vista's built in hard drive formatter i can format the drive to ntfs up to 2Tb
which i was hoping to have a little extra space to hopefully make a ntfs partition however i'll take what i can get at the moment... and as i'm sure everyone knows.. windows only supports fat32 drives up to 32Gbs

so has anyone else done this already? or any suggestions on what i should try?

I use this program,

Or try,
Quote:

type the following from command line dos prompt.

Format /FS:FAT32 X:

Where X is the path of your external drive you want to format.

No need for any extra programs, one line thats it.

Question stays if the PS3 can use a 3Tb external drive.... I remember something about 2Tb max but I just woke up so I am not sure :boring:

Edit: the PS3 can only recognize Fat32 partitions up to 2Tb because the max size of a Fat32 partition is 2Tb...

if anyone is wondering how i did it on windows vista (vista sucks balls)
i ended up using vista's "compmgmt.msc" tool (found using the start> search) to format it to 2Tb Ntfs.. then used "Guiformat" (found off of google) to change the file system from Ntfs to Fat32
that left me with 700Gbs left on my hard drive, and for some reason the vista tool, i just mentioned, would not allocate it for me..
so using Fat32formatter i allocated the rest of the drive.. and even though it gave me perimeter errors and was un-usable i was able to use vista to change it to Ntfs format and fix the perimeter errors

now i have a 2Tb fat32 and 700Gb Ntfs Ex hard drive :P

Did some research and you are correct:

Quote:

The fat32 file system has a technically maximum size of 8TB (on a cluster size of 32KB): 2^15byte (=32KB) * 2^28 (max. cluster count causing from 32bit adressing (4bits are reserved)) = 2^43byte

Limitations of FAT32 especially on large partitions: it is very inefficient in terms of space use for small files and badly prone to fragmentation and there is no journalling at all (unlike NTFS, ext3/4 and other modern filesystems)...

Hf when you have to defrag those drives :P
Took my 14 hours on an external hdd, and it was only 500-700GB, if I remember correctly :O And of course, you need to do it in 1 move, as you can't stop and resume a defrag :P
