I, while I do live in America, do not like American Football. Just so that is clear. What I am saying is Rugby, American Football, and all of the other types of football out there, are all really the descendents of the same sport. So they all somehow or other inherited the name.
American Football, is a football code. Rugby, football (soccer), Aussie Rules Football, etc. are all codes.
There are confilicting explanations of the origin of the word "football". It is widely assumed that the word "football" (or "foot ball") references the action of the foot kicking a ball. There is a alternative explanation, which is that football originally referred to a variety of games in medieval Europe, which were played on foot. There is no conclusive evidence for either explanation.
The rich in Medieval Europe played sports on horseback, while the peasants played on foot.
