Clean PS3 with fan test
I am not responsible for anything that happens to your PS3 do this at your own risk, same regarding the videos.
How to clean your PS3 40gig not 60gig by testing your fans, I was talking to some random guy I meet at a game stop and he told me what to do. I’m sure you can see a video demonstrating how to test the fan online. The only difference is I will be holding the PS3 off of the table so the fan part of the PS3 will be facing down. 1. First turn off the PS3, take off all cables except the power cable, and then place the PS3 vertically with the PS3 logo being upside down. 2. Ok hold down the eject button, and turn on the PS3. Immediately pick the PS3 up off of the table about five to six inches, so the air can circulate with out bringing back in the dust. This would run for twenty seconds, the red light power light would flash. 3. Flip the PS3 so the logo would be right side up, and turn the PS3 off and then on. The guy told me it helped quiet his PS3. Ok ran into a problem as I have the 60gig, and this dose not work so I found a video that shows how to do the test for me. 1. First turn off the PS3, take off all cables except the power cable, and then place the PS3 vertically with the PS3 logo being upside down. Turn on the PS3 it then would do a fan test, I my self think that it’s a safety feature that Sony made so the fans would run on max when the PS3 was placed on the fans so it would not over heat. I don’t know if this helps but this dose work as I saw dust come out. http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/1...0076cp8.th.jpg 2. Flip the PS3 so the logo would be right side up, and the PS3 would stop running the fans on max. I heard of this and you said you think sony did this as a safety feature but this video says otherwise.
YouTube - FAN TEST FOR 20, 60 . AND 80 GIG IS BAD!!! (I called sony) his guy called sony and they said tthe fan test is dangerous and would damage the PS3, Im not saying it doesnt work just that their is a high possibility of damage. |
I have done this before it was announced here. I have done it multiple times without any damage to my console. It only seems dangerous for other PS3 units like the 20, 60, and 80.

LMAO!!! He could barely described what it was lol. I think she took it the wrong way in the meaning of "upside down". I bet you she was thinking "upside down" as in the ps3 laying not standing with the Playstation 3 logo on the bottom.

this is dangerous for your ps3 no matter what model, cause it purposely causes the ps3 to overheat, there wasnt a feature built in to the ps3 to run a fan test, the Only resean the ps3 behaves like this, is because its overheating and if it is done to often will melt the core, which obviously cant be fixed without a mobo change, that is why sony are saying not to do it,
Just my 2 cents, but seriously once this has been done, put the console right side up again and put your hand on the back of the unit, i bet any money that its burning hot, proof of what i've said being true, if you wanna clean out your ps3, just use compressed air, which sony recommend, or failing that a hoover should do the trick just aswell, but make sure the unit is turned off, in either case, just in case, to use the hoover method, just place the tube near the fans, and move across the top of the unit for a few seconds then down the grills of the front/back then redo the top, and job done, whithout burning your processor, MadS, :) Ps sorry if i've offended anyone, but this idea is stupid, i'd only do it if you have money to waste replacing your ps3, cause it'll more than likely happen, if this is used, |

I was one of the first (or the first) who found this button combination on the 40GB PS3 (2.1.2008) and try this more than 30 times. No melting PS3 yet  When Sony says it damage the ps3, maybe theres an secret about this. |
I also don't agree with that. I have been doing it since it was discovered. And it has been running smoothly. Only until update 2.4x did the fan start to go crazy after about 5 hours of non stop playing. Before the update it was quite after those 5 hours.
