Blu-ray motors not spinning?

So I have two blu-ray drives. One has a broken laser, and I can't get either of them to pull in discs. I have disassembled them both. While plugged into the Playstation, pressing the two buttons on the motor controller does nothing. I have tried swapping out the drive's control board as well to the same affect.

This would lead me to think that I have faulty motors, normally. However, as a test I stripped a USB cable's positive and negative power wires, plugged the USB to the PS3, and touched them to the positive and negative sides of the motors. Both motors spun just fine. Reversing the polarity made the motors spin the other way.

This is really baffling to me. The motors clearly work but I can't trigger them at all short of manually applying power. :dontknow:

If anyone has encountered something similar or has any information that might even slightly point me in the right direction it would really be appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: This is the original fat PS3.

examine your drive's ribbon cable (the one from the motherboard to the drive)

i have a similair issue, for me there's one wire from the ribbon cable damaged, it's the one that transport 3,3V to the drive's photoled.

that one is also responsible for the inject/ eject.

if you hold the eject button for more then 6 seconds and you put a game half in the drive dous the drive take it in and then eject it again?

Hey, thanks for the reply. Anyway, I did sort of speculate there my be an issue with my drive's ribbon cable and have ordered a new one. However, I do not believe this to be the issue here.

When I press the eject button the drive responds with the laser head moving, as if to check if there's a disc in. The thing is, the motor has buttons on it that should trigger it when pressed manually, but they are failing to do so.

after opening up the drives you need to reset the cogs, have you done this?

The Worst 11-08-2012 12:14 PM

I guess I should have specified that this is the fat PS3.

Also, how would I reset the cogs? I think everything was set to the same position as prior to opening, but I am not positive.

Thanks, but no dice. They were already proper. I'm thinking of just purchasing a new motor to know for sure. Just hate that I'll have to wait like a week to know.

you probably know that there's a schematic for the phat's drive, maybe it will help you to fix the problems.
