Getting a PS3 with firmware 3.15
 

Hey,

I am picking up an original PS3 with the PS2 backwards compatibility today and it is on firmware 3.15. I haven't been in the PS3 scene in a long time, so I don't know what the next step is.

Should I update to 3.55 OFW, and then to a CFW?

Which is the best CFW?

What is the difference between DEX and CEX and REX?

What are EBOOT patches, and do I need them?

Basically, I don't care about online play, I just want a CFW with the highest compatibility with games. The newest game I am worried about playing is NHL 13.

Sorry if these are common questions. I have read the FAQ and it looks like I will need to convert my console to DEX for highest compatibility, right? Or is that guide old?

I would just like some extra confirmation on what I need to do, like a list of steps (ie. 1. Update to 3.55 2. Do XXX 3. Do XXX) and if possible, links on guides how to do that.

read the tutorial section, all the info on cfw is there

Search, read, read, read, dont install DEX... install Rebug Rex 4.21 (if you really want DEX easily) or rogeros 4.30 or Ermac 4.30.. or if your like me, stay on KMEAW 3.55 and use eboot fixes ;) (ps you dont need eboot/self/sprx/sdat/sfo fixes on 4.21-4.30 CFW unless the game has extra issues playing properly)

What you should do:

Search (you will find @itskamel s n00b tutorials)
Read (you will realise what you need to do, and why)
Update to 3.55
QA flag
Decide which CFW suites you best, people cant tell you for you, everyones opinions are different...

IMHO if I were to update it would be to 4.21 REX, but I'm quite happy on KMEAW for now :)

Thank you, I was mostly wondering if DEX was still current, I'm glad to hear its not!

And I'm getting the PS3 off Kijiji for $100. I have a PS3 on 3.56 right now, and it was cheaper and easier and faster than buying a flasher haha

One last question... I looked in the tutorial section and couldn't find the answer, but maybe I'm not looking in the right place, but how do I QA flag, and is there a tutorial for getting to 3.55 CFW? Thanks!
