OFW 3.55 to CFW 4.30 back to 3.55 - best way?

Hi all,

Me yet again. So I will be getting a PS3 running OFW 2.85 which I will then flash to OFW 3.55 and then to a CFW 4.30 and would like to easily be able to get back to 3.55 so that I can try out different CFW 4.30 or update if Rogero/ErmaC release new updates.

So I would download the OFW 3.55 and then place it onto a flash drive in the correct directly, plug it in and put the PS3 into recovery mode and do a straight, normal flash like that?
Then once on OFW 3.55 I would like to get onto ErmaC's CFW 4.30 v1.4 - what is the best way to do this? I have been reading multiple threads and guides here and on other various sites and none seem to say what to do exactly. Found some awesome guides on how to get onto Rogero CFW 4.30 and back down to CFW 3.55, although nothing for ErmaC...

Should I load a CFW 3.55 before attempting to put ErmaC CFW on? If so which would be best?

Then as stated above, downgrading from ErmaC to 3.55 again. He recommends using the rebug 999 Downgrader. I found a guide on how to do so on a different website (not sure if I can post links).

But this is basically it:
Quote:

1) Take '999' Downgrader, rename the file to 'PS3UPDAT.PUP and place it in your USB flashdrive in such format: USB FLASH DRIVE > PS3 > UPDATE >PS3UPDAT.PUP

2) Connect the USB to the PS3

3) Go to your PS3's XMB, go to Settings > System Update > Update via Storage Media and update your system from there to the '999' Downgrader.

4) Once updated, Launch Rebug Toolbox and go all the way to the right to 'Utilities' and ensure 'Toggle QA Flag' is not on. Then exit out of the toolbox holding 'O' on the controller.

5) Now transfer the 'ToggleQA.pkg' to the root of your USB and put it back in the PS3.

6) Now on the XMB, under 'Game' go to 'Package Manager' > Install Package Files > Standard Package Location > click on the 'ToggleQA.pkg' and install.

7) Once installed, go back under Game and launch the newly installed ToggleQA homebrew.
*your PS3 should launch the homebrew with the screen staying black, and while the screen is black, your PS3 will beep 3 times and return back to your XMB. If this happened, ToggleQA was a success.*

8.) Take the 'Rebug 3.55.3 CFW', rename the file to 'PS3UPDAT.PUP and place it in your USB flashdrive in such format: USB FLASH DRIVE > PS3 > UPDATE >PS3UPDAT.PUP

*Before continuing to step 9, please understand that you should NEVER have a game in the PS3 while installing CFW when ToggleQA is set.

9) Ensuring you have no disc in the drive, take that USB and connect it to your PS3 and simply update your PS3 as we did in step 3

OR
You can update it in recovery mode which is done like this:

Code:

1. Turn off Playstation®3.
2. Hold The power button down; The system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be promted to plug in your controller via usb and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

Now from there you can go to option 6 and update from there.

10) Once update is complete you should now be on 3.55 CFW!
That will obviously take you to the Rebug CFW 3.55.3 and from there as far as I understand you can simply flash to OFW 3.55 and do not need to toggle the QA flag (not 100% sure what the QA flag is, but it is brought up a lot and highly reccomended to be run before flashing from 3.55 to a higher version).

If I end up on OFW 3.55 I can do whatever I please obviously. :)

Hmm, are people unsure about ErmaC's firmware or am I missing something?

Ermac isn't as trusted a name as ROGERO or REBUG REX.

I have heard though that its a solid CFW.

I personally would stick to rogero for ease of use, or REX for more options in future.

Starting from OFW 3.55 is always best. Flash any CFW/OFW via recovery for safest method.

I have noticed that, ErmaC gives a lot less information as well with his releases. No sort of tutorial unlike Rogero and ReBug.

Although I heard some issues with the Rogero CFW 4.30 causing some HDD's to go corrupt and such? Not sure whether this is true or has been resolved?
I have noticed a few people getting errors when downgrading from Rogero CFW 4.30 (although most are from v1.0).

I would also prefer to use a 4.30 CFW as opposed to the REX 4.21 CFW. I would also need to do some sort of CEX to REX conversion then if I am not mistaken.

I had issues with QA flag when going from Rogero 1.4 to ERMAc, kept getting corrupt message when installing from recovery. Therefore went to KMEAW first, then ERMAc installed fine via recovery... Always go back to 3.55, saves a lot of bother.

CEX = OFW or CFW/MFW = retail or retail modified.
Wherea DEX = Debug FW (DEX to CEX = a conversion process)

REX = Rebugs CFW name (not 100% sure if it means anything more than a play on words to look like "king")

So "CEX to REX" = updating to 4.21 REBUG REX from 3.55 CEX.... nothing special :)

Oh ok, I see where I got confused there.
REX and DEX, Rebug and Debug. It is all really just R&D xD hehe

I think I will then possibly goto either the REX 4.21 or Rogero 4.30 v1.4 (I would prefer the 4.30, provided the issues have been resolved).
Rogero has some very nicely documented guides on how to downgrade as well as upgrade again.

Also seems as if the REX FW has a lot of die hard fans and followers.

I wouldn't say I was die hard, but Rex has done me fine

REX has support for PSX backups to be played via Multiman if I am not mistaken?
Also there are like 4 games or so which requires 4.30 I think.

Any other pros / cons of REX vs Rogero 4.30?

These games that need 4.30 can be resigned I'd needed, and if there is an update for it, it will most likely be a lower one.( I tried an f1 game, needed 4.25, but the update took it to either 4.20 or 4.10).
