Is it me or are gaming consoles dying ?

Lately I hear much about next-gen gaming will be more on mobile devices than actual consoles ..... Even the PS#scene (on- and off-topic) is dying and no new *hearty-eyes* games are out there anymore. Only hardcore veterans are in the name of their new sequels ... But even that doesn't to be much appealing anymore .... :vollkommenauf:

Besides all this that I see and think ... Is it realy just me or do you also noticed or have thought about it :dontknow: .... Let me know !! :questionmark:

yeah, i have been thinking the same thing. Unless console games bring something revolutionary next generation....i think they will continue to die out. Right now the future (aka $$$$) is in PC and mobiles devices.

Gabe Newell is engineering a new home console called the Steam Box. It's supposed to be like a mini PC where you access all your games from Steam and play them on your tv.

Plus some other company is creating a system called OUYA. It's supposed to be an Android based $99 dollar console that lets you download and play games from the Google Play store. A console like this has a chance at least since the games will be .99 cents to maybe $5.00.

I just think people are tired of paying $60 for games with a strong emphasis on so many cutscenes and very little gameplay. People want games they can pick up and play, like Angry Birds and that other cheesy casual stuff that's out there for the casual market. Casuals are starting to out number hardcore gamers 4:1.

A very touchy topic.

Console gaming isn't dying for one. There are too many people that would quit gaming all together if they couldn't do it on consoles. Consoles are just way too convenient; you buy a game, insert the disc and play it. 80-year-old Papa Joe could get into console gaming if he wanted to but tell that same man that all his computer needs is a new graphics card to play the latest games and you instantly lost him -- INSTANTLY.

Also, console gaming is cheaper initially (although PC gaming is the cheapest in the long run), so Timmy's mother and father look at the Wii U and say "Hmm... The Wii U is brand new, costs $300 and includes Nintendo Land." Then they look at PC gaming and say "Hmm... A gaming PC will cost us upwards of around three thousand dollars, it's going to need maintenance, if it gets a virus we will have to pay a technician to come and fix it, etc... No deal!". Of course, their complaints are very ignorant and are mostly uneducated assumptions. They probably don't even know what Steam is... which brings me to my next point.

Everybody knows what PlayStation is. Everybody knows what Xbox is. Everybody knows what the Nintendo Wii is. Go to your local bar, school or mall and ask a random stranger if they know what Steam is. Exactly. The PlayStation, Xbox and Wii are household names. When you hear the word "gaming," you probably instantly think of a console controller.

Not only that but YouTube commentators have a large following of... young children. These children see their favorite commentator playing Call of Duty on the Xbox and because they are impressionable, they begin to lean towards Microsoft and will eventually desire an Xbox if they don't have one already. How many YouTube commentators with over 100,000 subscribers are primarily PC gamers? A very small fraction compared to how many are console gamers. Consoles are handsomely advertised through YouTube.

There are many more reasons why consoles aren't dying. I tried to keep this post as unbias as possible because I obviously favor PC gaming 10X more than console gaming but the proof is in the pudding.

Exactly. Why would somebody spend $50 on the new Mario title when they can buy a clone on Apple's App store or Google Play with very similar gameplay for ten times cheaper?

I have not spent $60 on a game in very long. I think it's nearing two years now.

one thing i hate about cloud gaming is that you don't physically own your copy of the game (for when you want to play @ anytime even w/o an internet connection) but i think console's this past generation and the last (ps2/xbox/gc era) have all sorts of problems with the advent of using a mechanical hdd (I guess you could say the same with a pc) sure they load faster than a disc but if consoles went back to the old days of no hdds/discs...I personally think they would be much sturdier and last way longer.... (this is where cloud gaming can be useful) You dont have to worry about lost data/corruption..... (@ least if nothing happens to the cloud) or a worn out lens... Call me crazy but i feel like consoles released during the 16 bit era and down lasted way longer with fewer technical problems of consoles/pcs of the mid ninties- till now :dontknow:

Short answer in a way, yes is dying.
We cannot emulate real life *graphics* so we are going to basics again, *lack of imagination makes me a dull boy* motto. ;)

I don't think console gaming will die... Also steam is rampant with hax especially with cod games. So that's not the answer. If I could go with a mouse/keyboard combo on fps console games I would never go back to pc gaming. (I know solutions are offered but are expensive and still doesn't make it feel like it should as with pc.)

Xbox 360 isn't a gaming console, it's a media centre device with the ability of playing HD films, music, stream, internet browser and much more.

PS3 is too, but it's not too widely spread as it is Xbox 360.

Microsoft back in 2011 released a newer Xbox Media Remote:

And the older Xbox Media Remote of 360:

I have both remotes (the white one came with the HD-DVD Player) but only use the black one for my Xbox 360 Slim and TV.

@fanboysarestupid - Consoles are trying too hard to be like the PC. They should go back to being consoles.

japsander 12-20-2012 01:53 AM

consoles are catching up to modern PC gaming graphics and are trying to evolve into something different before they find a bottleneck when graphics are all they can be i.e. the wii-u controllers, kinect, augmented in next gen as extra functionality. steambox aims to bridge the divide between consoles and PC's anyway

they are not dying at all and thankfully they are not simply aiming for graphics anymore

mobile devices are fine to a point but they will never make dedicated consoles obsolete
