[Q] Preparing for DG, little confused

damn i hate being a n00b:)

OK, been reading for several hours... some interesting stuff and some garbage as well.

i have 2001b model on OFW 3.56. plan on using Players' E3 Flasher guide. (good guide BTW)

1st: E3 Flasher..
after the downgrade can the flasher be removed, or keep using the ESATA station??

2nd: Downgrade Dongle yes/no
must i use a Dongle, or would the FSM Tool do the same??
when i search downgrading without Dongle, it points to this tool^^

also i read of a PSP tool to use during downgrade
would either of these work for me??
if so, which is best??

3rd: Dual Boot
from what i gather, Dual Boot is for swapping between CFW and OFW
does this require two HD's??

also if CFW 4.30 runs current games, is Dual Boot even needed??

Final question: CEX or DEX
i understand CEX is Retail, so obviously i would be on CEX
Do i need to concern myself with CEX-DEX conversion??
or does this take place during CFW install??

sorry if the answers are out there, but i couldnt find them
sorry for the lengthy post too...
believe me, i have been on the other end of this convo with other devices and forums:)

1. E3 can be removed or left in and use esata station, your choice.

2. FSM tool won't work for a hardware downgrade, you need a dongle to get into FSM, E3 card reader, PSP, old iphone etc....

3. Yes for switching between OFW/CFW, 2 hdds needed, not much point in dualboot anymore.

4. CEX is consumer/retail firmware, DEX is Debug firmware, unless you specifically want to be on DEX FW, then there's no need to worry about converting to DEX.

PSP should work fine for getting into FSM while doing a hardware downgrade. You don't want to go into FSM on 3.56+ anyway because there is no way to get out.

After making your backups continue here and leave your PS3 on. There is no need to reboot.
Download Rogero's PS3 Nor Dump Patcher v0.01.rar
Extract to Desktop or where ever you like.
Put your bkpps3.bin in the PS3 Nor Dump Patcher v0.01 folder.
Drag your bkpps3.bin onto the PS3 Nor Dump Patcher v0.01.exe application.
Wait for the app to apply the 3 patches.
When it is done, you will now have a file named bkpps3.patched.bin
Copy bkpps3.patched.bin to your empty sd card and rename to bkpps3.bin
Safely remove sd card from PC and insert into e3 flasher.
Make sure you have nothing plugged in the USB slots.
Put all switches down on flasher. And press the red reset button under the esata plug on the faceplate.
Press start on flasher, and wait for blue leds to light up 1 by 1. When done lights will alternate flash.
Reboot PS3 from XMB.
On boot you should see "please connect controller screen" (note - If you see a blackscreen instead, you can still continue with next step)
DO NOT CONNECT CONTROLLER!
TURN OFF POWER BY SWITCH OR PULL POWER CABLE.
Insert your downgrade dongle in the right USB port.

im assuming that at this step in the guide the ps3 is still on OFW 3.56

if possible i would like to avoid buying a Dongle.
also looking into PSFreedom app. i have a few Android phones and an iPhone 3Gs

thanks for your help so far

Nope, at that point a patched dump has already been flashed back to the nor (with 3.55 coreos i think), allowing you to install 3.55 in FSM. Hopefully you have a compatible phone or something that works.

i do have a compatible phone for PSFreedom, already Rooted with CWM (i wrote the guide ;))

cool, so i should be able to use that instead of the Dongle
now i just need to order the E3 Flasher

thx bro, you've been helpful:thumbsup:
