When you make a backup of your game, it works 100%, but you are on 3.55 and newer games require newer firmware to play. You can delete the ps3updat.bin file found inthe game folder of the backed up disc, and the game will still work fine. For games that require newer firmware to play, you need to find patched eboots for the game you want, or a .pkg file that will patch the eboot for you. Most games have eboot fixes available, and you would just delete the original eboot file of the game and replace it with the fixed eboot. The .pkg fixes that are sometimes available do this for you.

Here is a compatibilty list. Is may be slightly outdated, but I'm not sure. I haven't had to use it in a while. It tells you if the games work with or without disc inserted, what firmware is required and has notes on how to get it to work. Ask if you have any questions.
