Pirate mentioned in the last update but the last few comments say it no longer works and I just had a quick try and couldn't get the ps3 to connect either.
Is there a newer version or another way to bypass firmware update?

I was using this method recently (and actually still use PS3ProxyGUI so I can download demos faster) and it still worked. I've updated to 3.15 because GoW3 demands it, but it was working just fine until I did that 2 weeks ago.
However, I do recall that after a certain firmware jump, I could not for the life of me connect to PSN on a lower firmware. I think Sony changes something in the way the PS3 connects to PSN every so often that using this method no longer bypasses.
However, we'll find out come Thursday.
And guys, this is likely not a joke. Sony's probably rushing this out to coincide with the PSN update so you'll have to update to get something you want- maybe that means there will actually be a decent update this week!
