Good topic , some question still though..... ModThatGame:

[strike]Do we still need to connect USB to supply Vcc +5V DC ?[/strike] re-read: yes of course

Does autoDFU mean we should be able to update it via USB (with Atmel's FLIP) after the psgroove_at90usb162_16MHz_autoDFU HEX is flashed with the ISP method from the startpost? (if so, what is going wrong @ frankdux? or is there a specific way to get in DFU modus?)

For completeness (so anyone with another dongle but with same chip can use this guide as reference):
Are the solderpads you use connected to AT90USB162 (32-pin TQFP / 32-pin QFN) ? :
- pin 24 (RESET)
- pin 16 (MOSI)
- pin 29 (SCK)
- pin 17 (MISO)

To BULLDOGG: Look a 14pin PIC to me, don't use this Atmel-only guide, but use Microchips PIC software and datasheets as a reference instead.

To obex: NO, see above sentence.
