I'm a bit curious myself as how the PS3 would handle both front and back usb ports at the same time though.

I don't think it makes any difference, should be the same as using multiple front ports, the ports are connected to that common point.
If you want the soldering to work out better clean the area with flux first, use less solder and tape over for safety.
