As long as it's formatted correctly and receiving enough power, it should be fine. Check to see if your drive shows up under Video/Music/Photos in your XMB. It will show up even if empty, provided the PS3 can detect it. If you see it, then you know it's just an issue with the folder layout. If you CAN'T see it, it's either not receiving enough power, is a damaged drive, or is formatted incorrectly.
