I used to do this too. I was going to post it but then I considered that this new way of booting is still just as relevant. It's just a lot less exciting for those of us who have been able to play backups for a long time.
This method apparently allows out of region games - did the swap method? I don't remember. I remember the original disk had to be the same region as the ps3 - obviously. Can't remember if it would accept different region backups though.
