I'm on 3.41 still but now am seriously considering moving up to 3.55 for the first time and only because of the ps1 backups situation. I got my ps3 around the same time the first ps3's were being jailbroken. I was aware that fw updates would not be a good idea if you wanted to jb your console so I stayed on my 3.41 and waited until things got more reliable.
Sure enough the dongles swept the world, first at very high cost... so I still waited... Then finally I saw the amazebreak for sale at 8.99 and I did some research and decided it was time and that was the one, besides if it didn't work it's only ten bucks! So I ordered it... jeez man, it took over six weeks to reach me! So finally I have the dongle and I have the 3.41fw and I knew the button combo etc. and I jb'd my ps3! Great times. (This was before cfw was available yet.)
So here I am using the dongle and the button combo for quite a while. (luckily I knew of the "having to turn off/unplug the ps3" problem before I ordered the dongle and I ordered an on/off switch for the back of my slim for an extra 2 bucks) This method worked for me for a long time but I really hated losing the ability to turn on/off the ps3 from the controller so when the first cfw's finally came out I was pretty excited. I waited again...
Finally it seemed the cfw's were reliable so I made the jump to hermes 3.41, even though I knew that kmeaw 3.55 was the most popular and also stable. Wow, that was easy! Okay! Now I have remote power back, excellent! Okay, games are coming out patched for 3.41 and 3.55, good I'm in the clear! No need to move to 3.55 yet. My bd drive makes an awful sound and I understand that I may need to play my games discless in the future so I stay on 3.41, besides its what I know and it works perfectly. If it's not broken don't fix it right? Okay... So now ps1 backups on 3.55 only and not too long ago re-marry bd drive... Even though 3.55 users now have to patch their games as well, no big deal really, I'm used to it!
So it looks as though I'll be moving on to 3.55 soon as there is really not much left for me to stay on 3.41 other than nostalgia. Already I have installed 3.55kmeaw on a friends ps3 and it works great. Luckily I saved the eboots/params that were patched to make the games work on 3.41 so I don't have to re-dump all the games!
I'm thinking if I wait just a bit longer I'll be seeing a 3.70 or 3.72 cfw soon or a dongle-free cobra patched cfw or even a multiman cfw! Just not sure about updating my cfw yet as the reasons for update still aren't outweighing the reasons for staying on hermes 3.41 too awful much! I don't have any ps1 backups around anyway so I'm not missing much unless I want to begin using backups of my own ps1 games. (which I intend to do as soon as I'm able, but I'm not in a real hurry since I have all the originals)
Looks like I will be making the jump in the next week or three, still kinda doing my old game again... waiting to see what comes around... you never know. I installed kmeaw 3.55 on my buddy's console but I am thinking of using rebug 3.55 when I update cfw. Still not sure which to use as there are so many options and conflicting opinions. Although it seems that really there are only two options for me kmeaw or rebug as those are the most widely used and tested and therefore most reliable. I guess I'm mostly waiting to see what happens with the ability to play ps2 games on the supposedly non-b/c ps3's, especially now that sony is supposedly releasing ps2 games on psn! With psn games decrypted and playing recently, this may be looking better than anyone thought!
Edit: spacing for easier reading of my rambling!
