Even in worst case scenario, when you find that a game burned to DVD/BD doesn't work you can still have it as a backup on the optical disc. At a later point you can always use the DVD/BD to copy the game back to your PS3 hdd and play it. So it is like just another way to extend backup storage using discs.
It is worth mentioning that you can backup couple of games on a single BD-R disc and later restore them to your PS3 hdd (not to be used with discBOOT app, but just as a backup).
Yes if you have a bd drive! Some games are small enough to fit more than one on a dvd though! For backup purposes only of course!
