Compiling C++

I've been trying to learn C++ recently and I use gedit to write programs I'm learning and compiling them in terminal. I was wondering if there is an easier way to run the programs I write besides this method. I've seen a program called codeblocks and downloaded the binary files but I'm a complete noob to linux and I have no idea how to install it. Its just a folder call amd64 with a bunch of compressed files inside that all look very similar. I don't know how to use them. I read up a little on installing codeblocks from source but I think I'm out of my league attempting that right now. Any help that I can get will be much appreciated.
