I use the Iomega 1tb and it works just fine no lag at all.. fat32 will be good as ps3 and multima will read it easily and all games stored on a fat32 part are shown in multiman..

if u expieriencing this prob i think u should try plugging in both usb connectors of external hdd in two ports of ps3.. it will should work fine then..
