When I'm finished gaming, I tend to go to the game's menu, then press Home button, quit game from there, eject disc from PS3 (triangle>eject) and power off.

I had your same issue...I'd suggest doing what I did but faster...it took me about 1 year to finally give up

Just buy a bluray laser or deck. It can be a bit tedious installing it, but it's fun and well, your bluray will work.

PS: The second link is for PS3 Slim ONLY. You can find a table online of what laser model each system has; but I would go the safe way and open up your PS3 and check yourself (remove the deck and check the label on it's underside...)
