Your real issue is that you must make sure that your HDD is 2.5" and not 2.8" as the bigger capacity ones tend to use as size.
I'm pretty sure there are 1TB 2.5" HDDs but they tend to be kind of costy, not to mention their 2.5" SSD conterparts... hahahahahaha

If you want to use actually one of the non-fitting HDDs on you PS3 without having your HDD outside your PS3 there is a very easy mod you can do in the internal cage of your ps3 to make it fit on your PS3.
The firmware should support almost any drive...but the PS3 southbridge is limited to 1TB drives...even with an external adapter, 1TB seems to be the limit.
