He tried but more than likely he has the original firmware not the latest on there since they updated as he got prolly one of the first batches out there.
The developers said all the ones shipped to customers around the 12th should have the new firmware by then.

From what I see he used the updated firmware:
"2. I install the CFW from JB 2
3. I install the Dongle Updater.pkg file
4. Then I went to the Dongle updater App.. then it install 2.1 ver on the Dongle."
So this dongle has a very limited functionality in playing only modified BR games provided with it; which makes me think that the rumor regarding the debug eboots was true.
