It can be open up if you really want to. But its not an easy process and will void any warranty you have. I had that drive for a little while. It had a lot of compatibility issues with a lot of devices. It was the wd smart firmware inside the drive itself. Wd has been working on the problem and released new firmware for the drive about 3 weeks ago. Update its firmware and you may have better luck with it. I formatted it using a tool on their site then activated Smartware in Windows . I don't know which one did the trick but it now works in Multiman as a NTFS drive !
