You don't f**k with the kind of people who install LINUX on their playstations.
Anyway, the only real damage has been done intentionally by Sony...after the jailbreak was released console sales spiked (and they do make a profit on every unit sold)...then Sony put a stop to that by blocking the jailbreak...then 3.55 got jailbroken and console sales spiked again, so Sony stopped it again by blocking that jailbreak...now game sales are starting to slow because of all the new titles that won't work with CFW. These losses are all 100% on Sony.
They claim that they are trying to prevent piracy...but that is a load of crap. Anyone who bought a PS3 for piracy would have simply bought a 360 for piracy if there was no jailbreak. If both were locked down, they would have bought PCs. Piracy hasn't increased much at all...and the small increases that have happened are only due to people being fed up with Sony, and not wanting to contribute to their actions through the percentage of the sales price that Sony gets.
As for the hacks, they made money on them. By giving away old games after the network came back up, Sony increased sales of the sequels by a huge margin. Imagine...give away something that no one is willing to pay for anymore and you increase sales of something that almost no one was interested in to begin with. Of course, even knowing this, Sony will never give away free old games again...because that is just how Sony is...they consider it a win any time their customers lose.
