Certain particles contain internal functions; we can see things happening within them at a certain rate of speed. When we accelerate these particles to the edge of the speed of light, we can see that these internal functions take much longer from out perspective.

As to the airplane, I just realized...if it was flying against the rotation of the earth then the plane was going slower than the ground; not faster.
