You can also go pc (wired or wireless) to router/modem and then bridge the network adapter (wireless card, ethernet , etc) with the ethernet port the ps3 is connected to.

Router/Modem -> PC -> Bridged Connection To An Ethernet Adapter PS3 Is Connected To -> PS3

If wireless from router/modem, this will eliminate all wired connections other than the one required to go from pc to ps3.

Yes, this is fine because both devices (pc/ps3) are on the same local network.
