Graphics are, to me, only important if the game is setting up an overall experience. For example, Flower wouldn't be nearly as effective if not for the beautiful graphics, whereas, imo, FPS games need only average graphics as long as the game is fun to play.
Always amuses me when this debate comes up, no-one ever mentions game soundtracks in relation to important elements. When a game has a great soundtrack it can raise the whole game up just as much as graphics and is as important for creating an atmosphere despite being regularly overlooked as an important part of the experience.
