Just my two cents but in the last six months I've had two externals crap out on me. One was a 1.5tb Western Digital. It went bad when I tried to expand a partition. The other was a 1.5tb Seagate. The Seagate started with a bad click and progressively got worse until it wouldn't work. I'm about to send it off to get the data recovered because I've tried just about everything. I can tell you when a hard drive goes bad it's not good. If the data is important, my advice would be to get a new one and back it up as soon as possible.
