I don't think it could be the HDD... it probably was an overheat. Try applying thermal paste to the internal components, and put the PS3 in a ventilated place. But also consider to replace the unit soon.
3-BD-Mirror fix only works with games stored in external HDD. That's is why the "
external" option is auto-selected.
PS.
The "hard drive corrupted" normally occurs if the game is writing to HDD and it hangs and/or the console it turned off.
BTW: Don't panic, restore your PS3 and hopefully the problem will not happen again.
