Done the format, started the firmware update it didn't stop at 50-53% and blank screen, it completed fine. PS3 restarted and it is on 4.11. I have a phat PS3 that has never been QA flagged or anything (I don't think - brought it secondhand).
Now off to redownload all my stuff.

Nice one for trying it, it seems the only way it might be true is if it's on a fluke basis :/.
