To my knowledge no PS3s, apart from those sold by Sony as having backward compatibility, have attained backward compatibility as the result of hacking. The exception to this would be the Cobra dongle which, purportedly, allows for PS2 play on previously non-BC systems.
So when you say "poorly" are saying you referring to the Cobra's performance in emulating PS2 games?

It's an observation of the dongles performance. I don't know for sure but I am told the software GPU emulator comes from PS2 classics titles. It is probably only tuned for a very specific range of titles and doesn't implement all of the GS functionality.
Full hardware PS2 emulation is your best choice at this stage, If you really value your PS2 games I suggest keeping your PS2.
