Also both companies have come out and said that a console with no ODD is impractical. There are regions of the world where consoles are sold that have horrible internet. Could you imagine every game you purchased being a 35 + gig game?
A console without ODD is a dead console. People would then start to realize that most games can be purchased much cheaper on Steam.
If things did go like this then I will not buy a PS4. I have refused to enter a credit card number into my PS3 for a very long time now, and I am not the only one that doesn't trust sony network security.
Also this effects more than just consumers. It also effects other businesses like Gamestop (or whatever you retailer of choice is.) If everything goes digital then there will be no more of walking into the game store and picking up one of your favorite games cheap used. No more taking a game to a friends house to let them try before they buy. No ODD means the death of consoles.

People really don't care.

Well at least I can take my ipod with me to a friends house or plug it into my friends car, and get the same enjoyment out of that music. With a console people will not want to lug around a console everywhere just to show a buddy a game when it is easier to carry a DVD case.
Plus we also get into that territory nobody likes and Sony is scummy enough to implement...always on DRM. Oh we are sorry your internet is down, you can play what you purchased once you get it straitened out........
