Damned, it also didn't work for me. This approach was suggested to my by the devs from #ps3dev on irc, i had assumed it would work, i don't get it.
The self files from the fixed patches are probably re-encrypted with the 'NP_klic_free' or 'NP_klic_key' that are present in /data/keys. (You could try change one byte in the /data/keys file and see if it can still decrypt those patched self.)
I will try and see what else the devs suggest.. i was pretty convinced this would work..
