I really don't like it when people use the term "Gameplay over Graphics" because what they don't usually realize is that graphics and gameplay go hand-in-hand and that all video games need
both or else the game will suffer. Especially in this new era of gaming.
Graphics add a level of immersion that enhance the gameplay experience. If I'm not immersed in an extremely detailed world such as Skyrim, it hurts the gameplay. Imagine Skyrim looking like Super Mario 64. I couldn't play it because I wouldn't believe it. It would ruin the entire feel of the game. Sure, it has good gameplay but why does that matter if I'm not even immersed in the experience.
Graphics matter just as much as gameplay does.
EDIT: I'm not saying that every game has to look like Crysis 2 on maximum settings with hi-res textures on the DX11 patch, but I'm saying for any particular art-style the developer chooses to base their game on, they need to try their hardest to PERFECT THAT ART-STYLE.
