Interesting to know.
And what does the disc symbol say per default? Is it a fake mounted executable of some sorts?
Or just the symbol which gives a SCE Error if executed without mounting a game there?
What happens if a disc is inserted, does it show up as a second disc symbol or does it just replace the fake disc?

From experience with a broken drive I can say for certain that if you get the drive to verify a disc just once
the disc symbol will remain in XMB as long as the PS3 doesn't get shut down or rebooted.
In my case I kept a backup mounted so it could not even try to load icon0 from the disc and fail.
Of course this is not a good permanent solution, unless you steal electricity from somewhere. -_-

That's why i'm pretty sure the cobra dongle just fakes a disc verification on system start.
But we'll only know for sure if someone actually reverses the dongle.
