Technically there is already a "bay" for the HDD in the old PS2, you just need the network adaptor to make the connection between the two.
It's been 6+ years since I regularly used mine but the network access at the time was so damn slow for transfering games, quicker just to take the HDD out and plug it straight into your PC.
