Back in 2011 or whenever PS3 got the 'Welcome Pack' $ony gave 30 crappy days of no awesome content on PS Plus like now, though, it didn't require any kind of credit card whatsoever.
I think they did it on purpose because there was plenty of free users using the premium service at no cost. But then again, it was their chance to show PS Plus potential to the public and they didn't.
Now this doesn't really matter, the rental game service PS Plus is a lot better now than it was before.
