Using a very large HDD with E3's ESATA Docking Station?

This is a very general kind of question Not one of those "Oh Noes! Whatever have I done!" ones (which like others I've had my share)

Ok, so as it stands I have the E3 working on my now downgraded 3.55 ps3 slim. I want to install a really big desktop drive in the dock. I have a new 3.5" western digital 2TB handy. So after some research, I found that there shouldn't *at least in theory* be anything wrong with such a configuration... As the dock alleviates and size or power issues that would normally be present with that kind of install.

So I powered everything down and took out my 160gb 2.5" that came with the ps3 out, put the large drive in and turned it on. I'm greeted with the normal black screen asking for the controller to be plugged in with the usb cable. After that I hold start and select at the same time for 5 seconds like it tells me, and it starts.

At first it showed a percentage on the screen and a solid data light on the dock, this lasted about 10 minutes, until it reached 100% - now I would describe it as "busy" the red light isn't being used, but by carefully putting some fingers on the top of the hdd I can feel it vibrating and moving the drive head internally.

My question is this: Was what I did correct? Should it work? and how long should this "busy" activity for a 2TB drive go on? It says it will shutoff when done and then need a firmware reinstall, which I have waiting on a thumbdrive.

Thanks!
