Mario64 had bad controls and that's not fun when the slightest error means failure and death and you running out of lives very fast and getting very pissed trying to perfectly time a very precise jump or some other pain in the butt thing. Same for Mario Sunshine, along with the ability for them to make it so nobody on Earth can determine depth in those tunnel areas so you can't tell if a platform is a tiny 4x4 foot square only a tiny jump away or a 4x4 mile massive platform miles away, so you jump, die, lose lives fast, and need to start over again. The next Smash Bros will probably have the same incredibly dumb controls as they have always gone with.

I can't imagine the brainstorming session behind the guys making the controls for the games going like this:

Employee 1: We'll assign grab to R.

Employee 2: What is block assigned to?

Employee 1: L and R.

Employee 2: So you press them at the same time?

Employee 1: No, pressing either will block.

Employee 2: How do you determine whether you will block or grab with R?

Employee 1: Ughhh...

Yet that somehow happened 3 Smash Bros games in a row and had more than just that for dumb controls.

I'm not going to pay a few hundred dollars just to play a Zelda game or 2 along with a few Mario Party games, they can keep it if that's all they've got. Luigi's Mansion was fun, but there's nothing to unlock and you can easily beat the game on a first try from start to finish in about 7 hours. If I ended up with one of there newer consoles for a surprise Christmas present or something, I'd probably grab a few games. There's a few gems I enjoy, but there's too little I enjoy on their newer consoles. They need some new stuff. Most of the most interesting things I've ever seen on TV and read are anime and manga, so why is it just Mario over and over and over? There 4 pages to this: http://www.gamefaqs.com/search/index.html?game=mario
They must have around 20 different games involving Mario each console. They need some new stuff. Stop recycling the same old few things over and over.

Have ever played Atari? Their joysticks sucked. Could just as well have been a D-Pad with just 4 extra diagonal directions. The D-Pad on many 3rd party made controllers for any console past the Nintendo were more of an analog stick than those things were. Just because it was a stick doesn't really make it a joystick. Somebody could have modified an atari controller and replaced the joystick with a D-pad and everything would work the same. They didn't have the full 360 degree thing going like how the N64 did, and their games didn't allow you to precisely move in any direction either, just horizontal, vertical, and I can't even remember playing a game that did diagonal.
on your last note, wasn't galaga an atari game that used diagonal?
