it actually started on the NES in 1987
and stayed with nintendo up until playstation took off
the old versions are still getting re-released on other platforms (thankfully) and as a franchise will not die if sony dont carry on.
the reason final fantasy will die if anything is because of the direction they have taken since FFIX. suddenly final fantasy doesnt seem right from that point and the latest installments are a disgrace to their memory
