If you look at this review on 4k TV and it's feasibility in the traditionally sized TV audience (32 to 55 inch) then the extra sharpness is only visible if you go right up to the screen.

based on that the leap into the next gen will as japsander said "the leap isnt that big. just shinier" The new consoles will most likely be kitted out for the 4k TVs BUT that means nothing as you wont notice the difference unless you have an 84 inch television (see http://techland.time.com/2012/08/30/sony-4k-hdtv/).

The only real reason to upgrade to any of the new consoles would be that new games would eventually be released on them only (same way as there is no God of War 3 for the PS2, even though they could if they dumbed down the graphics)
uhh... I agree 4K is useless for about 90% of the consumers, but even with fullhd (1920x1080p) there is a LOT of improvement over the current gen consoles, more detail, objects/particles and better realtime lightning which all require much MUCH more GPUpower as the current gen has.. which is already visible on small 32" tv's (yes to me 32" is small).. Just look at the PC version of battlefield 3 at the same resolution (but with every other effect on) looks much MUCH better than the console version (which still looks great and is mostly even held back by the lack of memory)..
One thing is sure though, better graphics certainly doesn't make it a better game....... But then ofcourse I'd rather play a good looking bad game, than a bad looking bad game... hehe.. but I certainly rather play a bad looking good game than a good looking bad game....
