Don't suggest entering Factory/Service mode, if you don't know what firmware the console is on. You cannot exit FSM if the PS3 is higher than 3.55.

My guess and money is on that its the thermal paste and solder joints, as Sony has gotten cheaper and cheaper with the stuff, they use non lead based solder wich cracks faster and there paste is just low grade crap, all that so they make you send in your console for repair to them for 160$, and they just replace cheap stuff with cheap stuff it's a endless cycle. If you know how to REBALL (as thats the more permanent fix opposed to a reflow) then do that and replace Sony's cheap a$$ paste with some Arctic silver. If you don't, call some local computer repair stores or electronic repair shops and see if they have the stuff to do so. I called local places to get mine fixed and it cost me only 35$ , instead of shipping it to one of those ylod repair sites for 90-180$

That is all true and may be the problem. But I would not suggest trying that, until you can further diagnose the problem.
