I have the exact same set up as you. I believe you are right that hard drives (especially external ones) are handled differently with this firmware version. I had no such issue with Rogero 4.30 v1 btw. The only way for me to get past this problem is to play with the power switch on the external drive. Sometimes I need to switch it on right before I switch on the PS3, it's been trial and error.

I also experienced this error message on starting my PS3. Long story short I had the same setup as you and Baargle. Apparently there is no solution to this as it is firmware dependent. As for me, I upgraded to an internal 2.5 inch laptop drive mounted
inside the PS3--all is working fine now.
