I will definitely use a spare hdd as I have 3, one for games I want linked to my psn account, one for homebrew and one for situations like this.

Rather than hex editing a dump I was thinking of installing a 3.55 firmware with the checks patched out and dumping that. This should provide the same effect, correct?
