It was just a suggestion. And is what I would try first. Before spending a bunch of money, and taking my PS3 apart.
I had someone bring there PS3 to me for downgrade. It was in the same state the OP described. I entered the recovery menu and installed CFW. The easiest downgrade ever. LOL.
