So if a PS3 game is 8gb, it does not mean that you need to split anything. If there is no file larger than 4gb in it, you don't.
You can check this compatibility list, to see what games have a file that needs to be split.
For games that contain files larger than 4gb use PS3Splitter to split the file for you.
