But thank you, that reminds me of another thing on my mind:
I don't know when this started happening, but when I turn my ps2 on with a game inside of it (or sometimes no game at all!) the little see through lens goes up and down, up and down. The first time I didn't notice this I was putting in a retail game (Devil May Cry), and the spinning (yet empty) "disc holder" touched the game and made an ungodly sound. So basically I have to make SURE I fully turn my system off before switching games. (I'm talking about from the ODYS screen, NOT mid game)

The "see through lens goes up and down, up and down"... Sounds to me like you are talking about the laser. If that's the case then it is because it is trying to read the disc. Since it happens on retail games as well as backups I would suggest adjusting the laser a bit. This will put less strain on the laser and improve performance. If it is hitting the disc's then the laser has tracking issues (could be from trying to read disc's and failing which is why I recommend adjusting it first). You also can try to stand the ps2 on it's side to see if it improves tracking/disc collide issues.
All this of course is a temp fix. The lasers in ps2's are known to wear out. Your best overall fix would be to order a whole new assembly for like $30 (laser, worm gear, motor, etc...)
