Yep afaik you need to use a HDD with a Y-cable for power off another USB slot or a mains power adaptor: reason being the WiiU USB's are very low power output, not enough for an external HDD alone, but you can use thumb drives apparently (not sure about in vWii, but definitely in WiiU mode).
I would speculate that if there are super low powered passport HDDs available they might work as-is.

i think that might be my issue with the freezing is cause i'm tryin to use a passport.. but as far as the code errors i never had the wads dumped from the bluedump, when i finally did that the code errors stoped i got to load homebrew browser and other stuff so i will have to try on a usb for now the last story looks very good upscaled
