I think I am getting the console by tomorrow and then it is some careful experimenting. Hoping to see the drive mechanism work and then I will most likely be springing for a lens replacement soon enough (as soon as I see the console being overall stable and not falling apart over the next couple of weeks).

The only benefits is to Re-marry you Drive in-case the drive which is coming with the PS3 is not the original one or the logic board is broken. if you are sure it is the original one. update to OFW 3.55. if it was not the one try remarry 3.15 then 3.50 last 3.55

I have seen some tutorials about downgrading from ofw 3.55 to ofw 3.15 with the QA flag. To your knowledge, would that be adequate to remarry the bdrom, should I need a full bdrom replacement?
As it relates to online, thanks for the bo2 warning FaxiY. Currently planning to not even connect this ps3 to the router up front until I get my bearings, and afterwards keep it blocked from the internet (through my router), but connect it locally to just use FTP. Will also look to see whether I can still use it to run netflix/hulu/amazon prime in the future, but will not even risk that unless I feel totally comfortable. If I am ready to play online, that is when I will shell out the cash to definitely buy the game and use my stock ps3 for it.
