There isn't much difference, their two flavors of the same software, PS3MS takes changes from UMS, and UMS takes changes from PS3MS. There are some differences (I think the interface itself is the biggest and propably only).

Yes the biggest advantage of showtime is that it can run and transcode video's natively, the biggest disadvantage of showtime is that it transcodes video's natively which the current implementation can't handle properly on most HD content (or DTS audio tracks).. It takes a lot of time and knowledge to rewrite the transcoding parts to take advantage of the PS3's CELL proc and RSX, and even though there are whitepapers out for using the PS3's CELL for decoding, the code on which the whitepapers are published doesn't seem to be available.. (You even have to pay for some whitepapers)..
